In Transported to Botany Bay, Dorice Williams Elliott examines how writers--from canonical ones such as Dickens and Trollope to others who were themselves convicts--used the figure of the felon exiled to Australia to construct class, race, and national identity as intertwined. Even as England's supposedly ancient social structure was preserved and venerated as the 'true' England, the transportation of some 168,000 convicts facilitated the birth of a new nation with more fluid class relations for those who didn't fit into the prevailing national image. In analyzing novels, broadsides, and first-person accounts, Elliott demonstrates how Britain linked class, race, and national identity at a key historical moment when it was still negotiating its relationship with its empire. The events and incidents depicted as taking place literally on the other side of the world, she argues, deeply affected people's sense of their place in their own society, with transnational implications that are still relevant today"--</mods:abstract><mods:note type="statement of responsibility">Dorice Williams Elliott</mods:note><mods:note>Includes bibliographical references and index.</mods:note><mods:subject><mods:topic>English fiction / 18th century / History and criticism</mods:topic><mods:topic>Exiles in literature</mods:topic><mods:topic>Prisoners in literature</mods:topic><mods:topic>Penal colonies in literature</mods:topic><mods:name><mods:namePart>Australia / In literature</mods:namePart></mods:name></mods:subject><mods:classification authority="lcc">|PR858.E97</mods:classification><mods:identifier type="eki">KXP1664261370</mods:identifier><mods:identifier type="isbn" displayLabel="ISBN 13">978-0-8214-2362-2</mods:identifier><mods:identifier type="ncidn">HT020133321</mods:identifier><mods:relatedItem type="series"><mods:titleInfo><mods:title>Series in Victorian studies</mods:title></mods:titleInfo></mods:relatedItem><mods:relatedItem type="otherFormat" displayLabel="Erscheint auch als"><mods:note>Online-Ausgabe, pdf</mods:note><mods:identifier type="isbn">978-0-8214-4669-0</mods:identifier></mods:relatedItem><mods:location><mods:physicalLocation authority="local library code">466</mods:physicalLocation><mods:holdingSimple><mods:copyInformation><mods:subLocation>11</mods:subLocation><mods:shelfLocator>DVU3998</mods:shelfLocator></mods:copyInformation></mods:holdingSimple></mods:location><mods:extension><vlz:info xmlns:vlz="http://visuallibrary.net/vlz/1.0/" version="2"/></mods:extension><mods:recordInfo><mods:recordCreationDate encoding="marc">20190715</mods:recordCreationDate><mods:recordChangeDate encoding="marc">20190830</mods:recordChangeDate><mods:recordIdentifier source="ubpbce">DVU3998</mods:recordIdentifier><mods:descriptionStandard>rda</mods:descriptionStandard></mods:recordInfo></mods:mods></mets:xmlData></mets:mdWrap></mets:dmdSec><mets:amdSec ID="amd989121"><mets:rightsMD ID="rights989121">
