"Middle English Romances features 11 selections of important surviving texts spanning from around 1150 CE to around 1450, each of which provide important insights into English medieval life. Organized around key themes of "nurture and correction," "trial and ordeal," "challenges to the Round Table," and "holy war," these complete texts were meticulously transcribed from the best manuscripts and thoroughly annotated to be more accessible to the modern reader. The new edition of this NCE features four additional new primary texts including Athelston, Rauf Coilyear, Robert of Cisyle, and The Grene Knight. To assist in understanding these texts, analogues of the selected romances are also included with detailed explanations from the editor. Critical essays offer varied approaches to Middle English Romances as a genre and reconsiders some of the recurring themes found in its tales. A selected bibliography is also included"--
